"Go after your dreams 'cause
you never know how easy they may be to achieve"

Below: Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes
in performance at their Brisbane instalment of 'The Future of Earthly Delites
Tour' - February 6, 1998. Read on to
find the transcript of various interviews and live coverage held throughout
this day, which it seemed, may as well have been dubbed 'Savage Garden
Day' in Brisbane. Darren and Daniel were presented with 'the Keys
to the city' by the Mayor of Brisbane in a morning ceremony at King George
Square, and then Brisbane was treated to the boys performance that night.
Their faces, voices and presence totally rocked Brisbane on this day!

Lord Mayor Jim Sawley:
We're delighted to have Savage Garden here. The keys of the city are not
given out to too many people but we're giving them out this morning to
Savage Garden... Since I've been in office for five years we've only done
it about four times. I'll tell you why I was happy to respond to
this - I think if two young guys from Brisbane can go and conquer the world
we should support them and recognize them. This morning is really
about Brisbane saying to Savage Garden 'well done'. They are very
proud Brisbanites and we're delighted to give them the keys to the city
and welcome them.
<Lots of screams as the boys enter>
Daniel <to audience>:
Hey guys, how are you?
Darren <to audience>: How
ya doin'?
... Mayor: That's
the keys to the city - and we say Good Luck and many more hit records world
wide.
Darren: Thank you
- thank you to the people of Brisbane - thank you - cool!
<screams... yadda yadda yadda>
cut to 'I Want You' with snippets of people saying
how great and deserving the boys are...
.
Ian Skippen (B105 morning crew):
... twenty to nine - B105 morning crew Savage Garden party in King George
Square! The boys now have the Keys to the City. It's been an amazing twelve
months for you guys!
Darren: It's
incredible! And you know what? We can get into anywhere after hours now!
Skating rinks - all sorts of stuff! Daniel's just about to go and
put 'em under his mat.
Daniel: The first
thing I'm doing is kicking Kieren Perkins out!
<laughter from crew and audience>
Ian: So tonight - this
is the Brisbane leg - we've had you working down the coast - how's it been
so far?
Darren: It's been
amazing - North Queensland - Just Queensland crowds in general are so supportive
- <after screams from audience> yeah it's been amazing. I think it's
gonna go off tonight - it'll be incredible!
Jamie Dunn (B105 morning crew):
well, I don't know about you guys but I'm just stunned. I mean, number
one in America is just beyond belief, isn't it!
Daniel: Ah yeah
- it's a big achievement. I guess any musician would go after that, and
we did and we came out on top - we got it you know - it's a great feeling!
Ian: Do you pinch
yourself now and then and think - Holy Hell - this is really happening
to us!
Daniel: I think
when things like this happen you do. All of a sudden it just kicks in and
you think we actually are achieving!
Jamie: You know
what I like? No matter how high up the American charts you get or how much
money you make or how many records you sell - you still got trouble coming
in in the traffic from Logan!
...questions from audience:
Rebecca: I heard
you might be making your home base over in America - is it true?
Darren: No! We just
bought houses here! No!
Daniel: Whereabouts??
Darren: ah - number 25… !
… Michelle: Hi! First I’d just like to
say congratulations on your success both over here and in
America, and I was just wondering what is the process in writing a song?
Daniel: I guess it sort of comes fairly
naturally to us - we love what we do. Usually it starts
with a musical idea from myself and I’ll hand them off to Darren
and Darren will come up with a story line and a sort of a lyric
melody and we sort bounce back and forth from each other I guess.
Robin Bailey (B105 morning crew): Who’s
in charge?? Who’s the boss?
Darren: Depends what day it is Honey!
Jamie: Is there a chance that you’ll write
a song like - I don’t have the keys to your heart but I
have the keys to the city?
Darren: oh JAMIE! Yeah - you just let
the cat out of the bag!
…Erika: Hey guys - you are an inspiration!
I’d just like to say congratulations and when is the
next album?
Darren: My God - when we stop touring
I guess! Look, we made a record, we’re in the process
of taking it around the world - I guess, you know, September?
We want to go back into
the studio and make a new record
Ian: Ok guys - so what can we expect tonight?
Jamie: Yeah let’s get to the concert tonight.
What can we expect.
Ian: Give us a sort of sneaky.
Daniel: It’s not very good!
<laughter>
Daniel: It’s good! It’s a very entertaining
show. There’s a lot of theatrics involved.
Jamie: Are you like Mariah - go off sixteen
times and get changed.
Darren: Yeah - there’s lots of zipper
changes and stuff like that - you don’t mind it the
occasional zipper’s down, do you ‘cause…? <reference
to first Cairns show where
Darren’s zipper wouldn’t do up - he told the whole audience about it
at the end -
total crack up!>
No - it’s good - it’s a bit of fun - a bit of theatre - probably more
than you’d expect actually. It’s a bit different to what you would
think we would do. It’s a lot of fun.
Ian: We’re expecting heaps! Good luck
for your continued success. We’re so proud of you and
congratulations. Thanks for coming in and receiving the
Keys to the City…
STUEY AND ZOE from B105’s Hot 30 - AT CONCERT
THE SAME NIGHT…
Stuey: We’re back stage with - aww My God!
Zoe: Can I just say - now I’m touching
Daniel - and now I’m touching Darren.
Darren: Can I just ask - why do they call
it the ‘Green Room’ when it’s never green?
Stuey: I don’t know.
Daniel: There’s a story behind that.
Zoe: Do you know it? Tell us!
Daniel: No I don’t know it -
<laughter>
but there is a story - something to do with Kermit the Frog!
Stuey: Now you know guys - Zoe and I were
reminiscing on our way our drive out here ‘cause
we thought it was about 18 months ago when you guys first came
into the Hot 30 -
remember that!?
Darren: Yeah it was when you trashed the
song!
Daniel: It was too.. You know what Zoe
said to us in the staircase - I remember this really
well. She said ‘I have a good feeling about you two guys - I think
you could actually
really do something.’
Zoe: No I said you’re going to be really
big and one day…
Darren: aww - I feel all emotional!
Zoe: and I said ‘one day I’ll be interviewing
you and you won’t even talk to me - but luckily
that part of the prediction didn’t come true ‘cause they’re just the
most down to earth,
wicked guys ever!
Darren: Actually an American journalist
said to us <in funny American accent> ‘you’re just
two of the most average guys I’ve ever seen!’ And we’re
like - gee thanks for that!
Thanks! We’re just soo average!
Zoe: Now - I heard a rumour that there’s
a special guest on stage tonight.
Darren: Actually there is! He’s
got four legs and he’s furry and his name’s Obe (sp?) and he’s
MY NEW PUPPY and he’s a Coca Spaniel (sp?)!
Stuey: So you’re having a cocka up on
stage with you?
Darren: oh yeah - and my dog’s coming
on too!
Stuey: Now guys - we were lucky enough
to go back stage and check out the sound check
which sounded AWESOME! Zoe said to me she thought there
was a little bit of Milli
Vanilli going on there - a little bit of miming!
Zoe: I did not you lying cow!
Darren: Hey! <he then launches into
a terrible version of ‘Tellin’ Everybody’ by fellow
Australian band Human Nature> - oh that’s not us - shit!
Zoe: I think Stuey just can’t believe
you can dance so well and sing at the same time! Now I
know there was a problem in Cairns - costume problems…
Darren: You know what - firstly can I
just say, honestly I could slam any artist who mimes - it
really bugs us actually - like boy bands and all that
stuff. I have to say that, it really
bugs me.
Zoe: what about DJs?
Darren: No DJs can do it! Yeah…
in Cairns my fly wouldn’t go up!
Daniel: Yeah in Cairns the venue got struck
by lightening (three times) and we had to actually
send a human person up to be a human circuit breaker up
in the board and we were
taking power from Kuranda and Port Douglas so Cairns could have our
show!
Darren: Seriously, we lost power about
three times during performance and then the whole
final dress thing and I came out on stage and my zip wouldn’t
work so the crowd waited about five minutes -and I admitted it to everyone
and no-one knew!
Stuey: So you dropped your zip, flopped
it out and away you went!
Zoe: What colour were your undies?
Darren: <thoughtful breath> black!
Zoe: Is a G good for on stage?
Darren: Yeah, lucky I didn’t wear it the
other way ‘round!
.
.
Well, as far as I know, Darren's zipper stayed
up at this concert - but Daniel fell off the stage!! Anyway, hope you enjoyed
- there may be a few incy wincy mistakes, but it's as accurate as I could
make it!
