It seems to me, based on the responses given, that Mulder =is=
indeed a romantic, but not of the basic stars-hearts-and-flowers variety.
What I mean to say is that Mulder is not a romantic in the traditional
sense of the word-- he's not going to be the one buying those lame Hallmark
cards with treacly phrases. He's not the type of guy to serenade
Scully outside her apartment window (which wouldn't really be too romantic
anyway, since she lives on the first floor!) But I mean, why should
he be? He's not a traditionalist in any other aspect of his life,
so why should we expect him to be traditional in his methods of romancing
a woman? Plus, there are certain things we know about Mulder, that
have become almost a given. He's a guy with a lot on his mind --
the weight of the world on his shoulders on a constant daily basis, especially
when it comes to his partner. I mean, the woman has put herself
in a great deal of jeopardy on his account, and there's a large amount
of guilt he bears as a result. Look at it this way -- if the woman
you love was once abducted by aliens or creepy government people (I myself
am not quite sure which) and was missing for three months =and= nearly
died as a result of having a small computer chip in her possession that
=you= had given her, wouldn't you find it a little hard to come out with
all of those normal endearments and platitudes that most people use to
say "I love you?" Give the guy a break... he's got it tough,
here! ;-) Not to mention the fact that =we= all know that his tongue
is tied even more than it needs to be by Master CC and the writing team.
The X-Files is so great specifically *because* everything is between the
lines, and nothing is out in the open or on the surface. So would
we expect Mulder's declarations of love to be any different?
That said, let's run down the Top Ten, as voted on by all of
you who took the time to vote. (If you =didn't= vote, no fair complaining
about the results... <g>)
10. "Oh yeah, it's, it's great, I'm surprised I put up with you for so long." -- This one comes from SLEEPLESS, and is what Mulder says to Scully when she asks how things are going with his new partner Krycek. =Great= because it's his way of telling her how much he misses her...
9. "What are you wearing?" -- This one comes from WAR OF THE COPROPHAGES, when Mulder's talking to Scully during the first of one of their numerous phone calls. Well, if the guy's concerned about what she's wearing while she's on the phone with him, that's one step away from phone sex, don't you agree?
8. "Well, I may not have the X-Files, Scully, but I still have my work, and I still have you..." -- This one's from LITTLE GREEN MEN and yes, there =is= more to the line, but we all know that the fact he still has *her* is the most important part. <g>
7. "Always." -- Just a word, from IRRESISTIBLE, but after Scully's just told Mulder that he can use her help and he replies like this, need we say any more?
6. "I think you drooled on me." -- From PUSHER, and isn't it amazing that being such a totally relationship oriented episode, there isn't a more revealing line from him? But given the circumstances that motivated it, I guess I know why people voted for it... <g>
5. "How come you never run my bath?" -- From REVELATIONS, this one happens to be one of =my= personal faves -- even have it on a sound.wav! And the look in his eyes when he says it... <sigh>
4. "You know what I like!" -- This line from CLYDE BRUCKMAN'S FINAL REPOSE follows the little Mulder/Scully exchange about Chantilly lace... but us die-hards like to think he's referring to more than just the investigation.<g>
3. "I =don't= trust them. I =want= to trust you." -- From ICE, and what a great scene is *that*, eh? Gotta love the look on Scully's face when she hears Mulder say it...
2. "I think it is remotely possible that someone might think you're hot."-- From EBE, and it's pretty obvious (to me, at least!) whom that someone might be...
And the line that garnered the most votes, is:
1. "If there's an iced tea in that bag, it could be love."-- From TOOMS, of course, and how many of you went on a boycott of root beer after seeing that episode?????
Well, that brings us to the end of this week's list. I was going
to just reverse the topic for next week, but for the moment, I'm having
too much fun analyzing Mulder's latent romantic tendencies.
