The true and tragic, yet beautiful love story of Earnest Hemmingway (Chris
O'Donnell) and Agnes Von Kurowski (Sandra Bullock) during the first World
War.
"In war they found each other... In each other they found love..."
Although
seven years his senior, Agnes fell in love with this handsome young man
who came into her care after being seriously wounded. She saved him
from losing his leg and felt a special bond with him... just as he knew
from the first moment he saw her that he wanted to marry her.
After weeks of trying to convince her that she really was in love with
him, Earnest finally got his wish and they spent one blissful night together
before he was sent back home to America.
Although she had agreed to marry him, she did not let him hear that she
loved him until it was far too late. By the end of the war, doubts
had overrun her and she let herself be led into another 'more sensible'
romance.
After receiving a letter from her which, in effect, ended their relationship,
Earni's heart was broken, rather, shattered, and he lived with a bitterness
and anger which was disheartening to see, especially in light of his previous
lighthearted, and young-at-heart charm.
Agnes' heart eventually led her back to her shattered Earnest, however,
his pride would not let her back in. This was a tragic ending because
it was so evident these two were meant for each other - just look at the
evidence - after being married four times Hemmingway took his life holding
her letters in his hand. They would love each other forever, yet,
were never happy together again.

Based
on the book "Hemmingway in Love and War"
(which
is a collection of Agnes' diary entries, letters and first hand accounts
of their friends).
As
well as this; "Farewell to Arms" by Hemmingway, has much based on his experience
of this time, and the character of Catherine is apparently based on Agnes.
