"I'm gonna do my kind of
dancing with a great partner, who's not only a terrific dancer but somebody
who's taught me that there are people who are willing to stand up for other
people no matter what it costs them. Somebody who's taught me about the
kind of person I want to be - Miss Francis Houseman."
Dirty
Dancing
Here we have an absolute classic romantic movie
of the 1980s. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey brought dancing and hot
romance together in this movie that left us begging for more - more of
the music, more of the chemistry and more of that 'dirty dancing'!
Dirty Dancing follows
the vacation of a lifetime which was had by Francis 'Baby' Houseman, a
good little 'Daddy's girl' who finds herself entwined in the personal lives
of the 'entertainment staff'. Baby is transformed into a dancing queen
in her efforts to help - and impress 'bad boy' Johnny. This is an intense
relationship from the very word go, or rather, 'dance'. Baby had her first
dancing encounter with Johnny when she 'carried a watermelon' to the staff
house, and we could understand from that just *why* she wanted to hang
around these sexy staff members.
"It's a feeling, a heart beat"
The enticing beat of 'Hungry Eyes' starts playing
as Johnny places Baby's hand on his chest, in an effort to hypnotize her
into 'feeling the beat' of the step. From this second we begin to see Johnny
looking at Baby in a different way. The tension between the two becomes
greater through all the 'learning to dance' scenes, and as Johnny's respect
for Baby grows. The sparks *really* begin to fly when Baby asks a shirtless
Johnny to "Dance with me" in his silent cabin, just after she's admitted...
"Me? I'm scared of everything.... and most
of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling for the
rest of my whole life, the way I feel when I'm with you."
A number
of events occur which eventually causes the lovers to part. No one had
expected that either of them would find what they needed in the other,
and no one really cared - until the final night of the holiday term. Johnny
returns unexpectedly to claim his 'Baby' from her 'corner' and take his
rightful place in the finale. A spectacular display of dance eventuates
with Baby gaining the confidence to do 'the lift' and everyone in the room
being enticed into the art that is 'Dirty Dancing'.
We are left to presume that Johnny and Baby
worked out some way to continue their relationship as we see the final
shot from above - everyone enjoying what Johnny and Baby have introduced
them to, and Johnny saying to Baby "I've had the time of my life and I
owe it all to you" before treating her, and us, to one final 'screen' kiss."
