So it doesn't take a lot of brainpower to figure out that you have all realized what good old Mulder and Scully have spent the past three years denying. I mean, just look at the evidence!! (That is, after all, what Scully would urge Mulder to do.) In past weeks, we've analyzed their on-screen relationship to the point of insanity... and even there, in the world of Chris Carter, some truths remain self-evident. Doesn't matter that Scully would have to stand on a step-stool to make kissing a comfortable option -- people in love have been known to do crazier things!! And as for Mulder's rampant obsession with those pornographic videos... well, you have to cut the man a litle slack. I mean, being in love with your officemate isn't the easiest thing to cope with!! And just think about the trouble they'd be in if anybody at the Bureau found out!! What would Skinner say? So here we are, about to talk about the truth, which as we all know, is most *definitely* out there!! I was pleased to discover that so many of you agreed -- made the tabulation easier than ever!!
10) Because It Would Blow Chris Carter's Cool -- well,
without question, this =had= to make the Top Ten!! There's nothing
that would make Mr. C angrier than to have our two favorite agents fall
into a passionate embrace atop some freshly laundered cotton sheets, or
get busy in the back of one of their many rented Ford Tauruses.
I mean, what does he =really= think they are up to during the commercial
breaks, anyway?? What needs to happen is that during one episode,
Mulder and Scully should just move into position for the wild thing --
and no matter how many times Mr. C calls cut, David and Gillian should
just refuse to listen. <Reality and fiction start blending for
Nic... must be all the Prozac... ;-) > Well, all we can
do for now is dream -- and I think we're off to a pretty good start!
9) Because We Can't Imagine Them With Anyone Else
-- I think that one pretty much speaks for itself. No more UDBs or
UDGs... we don't want to see them. Get rid of Bambi, and Det. White,
and Phoebe. Forget about Pendrell and 'Biff' from "Jersey Devil"
and that cute SWAT guy from the "Pusher" episode... we don't want to see
Mulder or Scully in the arms of anyone else but each other. And why
would we?? We've all seen those photos in TV Guide, which have become
affectionately known on the Net as 'Mulder and Scully Go To Prom'.
I mean, is there =any= better visual confirmation that these two make a
*brilliant* couple?? I think not....
8) Because They Could Carpool -- well now, isn't
=that= a cute one!! Lots of people voted for this one... nice to
know that Philes are so eco-conscious!!! But truth be told,
it makes a lot of sense!! Having not spent any time beyond one (drunken)
collegiate summer at Georgetown, I don't know a whole hell of a lot about
the Washington, D.C. vicinity, but judging by how often Mulder and Scully
jump back and forth between each others apartments, they can't possibly
live =that= far apart!! So why not carpool? It makes total sense,
especially if they've just woken up in the same bed mere minutes before....
;-) Plus, a lot of companies now give you a bonus in your paycheck
if you carpool, and Mulder could tuck away that extra cash to pay for the
ring. (Stop me -- I'm getting ahead of myself....<g>)
7) Because Opposites Attract -- truer words
were never spoken. I mean, for all intents and purposes, Mulder and
Scully couldn't be more different... and yet, they mesh together perfectly.
(Get your mind out of the Muldergutter, folks, this is a straighforward
answer.... <g>) He's the believer, she's the skeptic -- which
in my book makes a perfect balance. He's tall, she's short -- which is
totally endearing, especially when you imagine the two of them trying to
slow dance! She comes from a good, stable family, and he doesn't
-- which is OK, because I think Scully's grounded enough to provide a nice
environment for the both of them. And I could go on... but I think
you've got the point! And they're not =total= opposites --
they are both smart, intense, and very loyal.... which I think make up
a great foundation for a relationship. Enough said...
6) Because Both Love Talking On The Phone -- if there
was ever an episode to prove this a reality, I would have to say "War of
the Coprophages" would be it. I mean, who is cuter on a cellular
call than Mulder and Scully? Those two practically have the phones welded
to their ears, and as far as I can tell, the only numbers they have on
speed dial are each others!! Of course, if they ended up together,
they might actually end up spending less time on the phone, but somehow
I doubt it. I can just see Scully in the kitchen calling Mulder in
the bedroom, "Hi! Do you want chicken or pasta for dinner?"
Hmmmm, the possibilities are endless....
5) Because Mulder's Always Getting Hurt and Needs
A Full Time Doctor On Call -- who cares if the doctor in question has been
known to shoot the patient?? I mean, cut poor Scully a little slack
-- she did what she had to do! And we all know she's a fab physician,
even though she spends a lot of time cutting up dead bodies. Scully
makes a great nurse for Mulder, and babe that he is, there can be no argument
that somehow he always seems to end up on the short end of the stick when
a fight breaks out!! Besides, who am I to argue?? You guys
voted -- and enough of you seem to like the idea of Scully nursing Mulder
back to health (it =is= pretty romantic) to help this one win the number
5 spot!
4) Because We Can't Wait Any Longer -- not like Chris
Carter cares...<sigh> Millions of R'shippers all over the
globe are suffering nervous breakdowns waiting for these two to kiss, and
he keeps popping out episodes like "Hell Mone" just to drive us bonkers!!
"Pusher", "Pusher", "Pusher"... we =know= what we want to see! And
what we want to see is what happened after Scully took Mulder's hand and
led him out of Modell's hospital room!! Well, all we can do at this point
is hope and pray... and study our TV Guide photos until we are blue in
the face. But maybe someday (the movie, if they make it?) our dreams
will come true. In the meantime, we always have fanfic.... <g>
3) Because They Don't Spend Time With Anyone Else
-- again, I have to say, this one's pretty true. I mean, it's tough
to have a relationship with anyone else when every five minutes your partner
is calling you on the cellphone to come down to the autopsy bay or check
out the latest possible alien sighting. There don't seem to be any
other agents in the FBI, at least as far as Mulder and Scully are concerned.
(Have you noticed, whenever another agent =does= show up and play a significant
part, they might as well be wearing one of those red shirts from the old
"Star Trek" eps that say 'shoot me now'! in invisible letters?)
So I guess this must be true... Mulder and Scully are destined to
be together, because they don't leave any room in their lives for anyone
else. Sounds okay to me! ;-)
2) Because They Are Partners In Every Sense Of The Word
-- a brilliant turn of phrase, if I do say so myself!! Mulder and
Scully share a level of loyalty, committment, and trust that is unparalleled
in any world, be it fiction or no. Show me any other large or small-screen
couple that has endured what these two have... you can't do it! And
once again, not to harp on a great ep, but I have to -- the moment where
Mulder almost shoots Scully in "Pusher" and then in the next scene she's
grabbing his hand, basically saying, "It's OK -- I still trust you with
my life" -- well, let's just say, you don't come across =that= every day!!
It just seems natural to me that these two would finally be tempted to
cross that line... if you share everything else, why not your bed??? (Ooohhh.....
sorry -- I know this is a PG-13 column! Slap me! I slipped....
<g>)
1) Because Best Friends Make The Best Lovers -- I
had a hard time deciding whether this one should be counted separately
from #2 or not... but so many of you used words similar to this, I decided
it needed its own category!! The word 'partners' does, indeed, refer
as much to their life as FBI agents as anything else... whereas the word
'friends' signifies something deeper. A level of sharing and caring
and devotion that transcends any sort of working relationship. What
this means to me is that no matter who else they could or would turn to
in a time of need, Mulder and Scully would choose each other. And that,
to me, is about as romantic as it gets.
